As a member of a spinners and weavers guild, I'm very familiar with this term. In this part of the country(northeast Pennsylvania) it is a linen and wool blend that is spun together to create a stong and warm fiber to be woven or knitted for use.

I know those 3 "domes" on the armoire in Karen Weir-Jimerson's home are not storage jars, but what are they? I got one from a friend who was going to throw it out but I thought it had purpose. Have taken it to a couple of antique stores and no one knows what it is. Mine is the same pale green and measures 14 inches in diameter. Any help would be appreciated. mc

You have a great cloche...cloches (French for bell...as in Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's book and also the name of a hat syle of the 1930s). in color are very rare as they were just ordinary garden accessories. The only one I have found that is not a repro (yes, they make repros of the cloche, also) is the one I bought for too much money ($15..too much for a dealer!) at a flea market because it was French and in the reverse swirl pattern which I am addicted to...I treasure it. Take good care of yours...you will most likely never find another one like it.

I am in the antique business, and I am puzzled about something that I have noticed in most of the decorating magazines to which I subscribe. They refer in their articles to antiqueS shops, antiqueS malls, and antiqueS shows, all of which are presided over by antiqueS dealers. Yet I know of no one in this business who uses the plural in describing the above things. Who decided this was proper useage? If we were to carry over the same principle to other businesses then we would buy our cars from carS lots, our food at grocerieS stores, or screwdrivers at a hardwareS store. Does anyone have an answer to this?

I think editors do this to clarify when something is "about antiques" rather than just "old." They add the "s" to clarify that they are not talking about a shop that is an antique ... an antique shop. Now, the fact that it would be difficult for a shop or a mall or a show to be an antique seems to not make a difference.

I highly recommend the work of folk-artist and art quilter Valarie Jean Bailey. Her work is visually stimulating, and highly collectable. Most of her work is based on her life in the South.
She can be found through Artistic Lifestyling.

Hi Country Home fans :) I am looking for any information on penny quilts. I would love to learn how to make them with vintage wool/felt. Here in California, I have a tough time trying to get information on them, let alone find someone to teach me! If anyone can help, I'd love it! Thanks! Megan :)

Simichrome metal polish works too. Put a little on a q-tip and rub it on the item in question. If it is bakelite it will turn a deep yellow, like a cigerette butt.

Fire King is being reproduced in great quantities, especially kitchen items in jadite. Beware! Even Martha Stewart has reproduced many items. It's beautiful stuff, but if you want the real thing you need to study and learn.
