Sheet Music

Many people collect music for sentimental reasons, songs being such powerful vehicles for evoking memories. Other collectors cherish the cover art, from handsome black-and-white illustrations to stunning color lithographs. And some collectors revel in the enormity of the topic: Literally millions of sheets of music exist.
Prices for old sheet music vary greatly. While rare sheets command hundreds of dollars, sheet music starts at $1 and $2 and there are many collectible sheets in the $40 to $50 range.

Today, highly desirable categories of sheet music include anything from E.T. Paull, a new York City music publisher in the late 1800s to 1920s whose sheets are sought for their high-quality color lithographs. Historical or war-related sheet music, especially Civil War-era songs, are also quite collectible, as are black Americana songs, ragtime, movies, celebrities, and composers. Baseball is one of the most expensive categories, with any sheets that picture or relate to a particular player being the most desirable and valuable.
