Children's Clothes

With collectible vintage children’s clothing, the real treasures often come from the pauper, not the prince. Christening gowns and other special-occasion outfits—especially those from affluent families—were carefully stored and passed from one generation to the next. Because of this purposeful handling, many fine examples of these items survive today and can be found.

Harder to find are everyday garments worn by boys and girls—particularly those fashioned from simple cotton prints during the 1930s and earlier. Unlike fancy garments, these simple rompers, pinafores, and dresses weren’t protected and stored. Instead, they were passed down from sibling to sibling until they wore out. Then they were usually tossed into the ragbag and recycled into quilts. Boys’ clothing—plainer than girls’—is even harder to find.

Children’s shoes are also a hot collectible. And, unlike with antique clothing, the wear and tear on a tiny pair of high-button shoes can actually increase their charm—and value.

Vintage may not always be true vintage, how do you distinguish the real from the fake? Even more, where did your antiquing take you when searching for vintage children's clothes?
